Simple

Have you ever looked at an item and wondered: "How does this work? Where is the manual?" Why make things complicated? The more detailed and complex and item is, the greater the chance it can fail, right? So, by keeping my designs simple, you worry less and enjoy more.

Light

Integral to enjoying your outdoor experience, is being physically and mentally able to. If you are hauling around a 60 pound pack all day, it is a challenge to look beyond the sore body, swollen feet, and pure exhaustion, to the experience itself. By seeking ultralight weight solutions without sacrificing much in the way of quality, you are able to make lighter loads a reality and Enjoy the journey along the way.

Design

Let’s Face It. Sometimes in our world, you have to make it yourself in order to achieve the ultralight options. In the items I manufacture, I give great attention to function, comfort, and safety. The details are what count.

My philosophy is my motto: Keep it simple, Keep it Light.

Why Simply Light Designs

I am a one-man outfit, manufacturing my own products right here in the USA. I make all of my products personally and will never outsource the work. I love what I do and in making sure you are happy with your product. I know that by keeping personally involved in every item I sell, that each one will meet my personal standards and would be something that I myself would use.

I believe that what sets my products (and all Cottage Industry products) apart, is the attention to detail and quality craftsmanship. Granted it takes extra thought, labor & cost, but the end result is a superior product that will last for years to come.

Growing up, my parents gave me quite a bit of exposure to outdoor life. Every year taking multiple vacations to see the country, and especially the natural wonders that leave you speechless. We were not ultralight, not even lightweight, but we enjoyed it. Life took a few turns - marriage, work, kids - and time to enjoy the great outdoors became scarce. Fortunately, 4 years ago, my employer decided I was making too much money, and let me go. Now, I had a lot of free time and was able to spend more time experiencing nature.

After 15 years, the backpacking world had changed a lot and I was excited to embrace the ultralight movement and the new world of "hanging". However, I noticed that a lot of the gear was so expensive. So, what would I do? Work more hours to afford the gear, giving me less time to enjoy it? I had just gained this time and I was not about to give it back up.

Well, after getting involved in several online communities of other outdoor adventurers, I decided to try my hand at making my own gear. I remember the first stuff sack I made. You could not find a straight seam anywhere on it. But, I still use it to keep my sewing feet in. And it reminds me of how far I have come since then.

After making a few pieces for myself, I realized that I actually enjoyed making gear, which led me to consider starting my own business - Simply Light Designs.

By nature, I am a workaholic, having pretty much always worked 7 days a week and always giving 110% to any endeavor I take up. However, as Simply Light Design progresses, I seek to keep it balanced with my family life. I enjoy my family and want to be there for them. Fortunately, Simply Light Designs has made that possible. I was able to set up a shop in my home where I manufacture my products and this lets me take care of my family and work interchangeably.

I have also decided to take one day a week off. It fluctuates from week to week depending on work load and family obligations. This is a day I am setting aside for my family and appreciate my customers being understanding of this. Am I any less committed to making you happy? No, in fact the opposite is true. That family day recharges me, so that I always give my all in keeping my customers happy so that they spread the word and keep coming back.

My family has just completed a Cross-Country move from Indianapolis, Indiana to Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The move is helping my family to be more connected with nature and each other. It has also allowed me to set up a dedicated workshop for Simply Light Designs. We have wonderful views and an abundance of TREES, so look for some changes in scenery in some of the online photo galleries. A big thank you to all my customers who have helped make this move possible.
